Serving and work

A random idea occurred to me. Are we all serving something bigger than ourselves, something noble, through our work, whatever it may be, right now?

Since I am a Catholic, I think about it as serving the Lord through my work.

Am I serving the Lord through my job?

That’s a question I’d like to ask myself more often.

I think it’s a wonderful way to think about it. Sometimes, we get caught up in the drudgery or travails of work and forget the "why" of what we do.

But if we think about it as serving something bigger than ourselves, the dissatisfaction somehow goes away, or is diminished.

This something bigger may be your family, or a cause that you deeply care about.

So when you gain skills or finally outgrow your job, or some opportunity comes along, then it is your duty to pursue a different path, especially if that path or role enables you to serve Him better.

But for now, the mission is simple: Serve Him through your work. Or serve your cause or family or dream through what you do at work every day.
